Fines Melbourne and enforcement

How fines are paid, what happens when a fine goes overdue, and how Melbourne Police enforce it: notices, community work permits, clamps and seizures.

1. Fines Melbourne

Fines from police and the money part of a court sentence are paid through Fines Melbourne on your phone. Pay on time and nothing more happens.

2. When a fine goes overdue

There is no Sheriff in Melbourne on Legacy: an overdue fine is enforced by Melbourne Police. From then on:

  • You show a Fines Melbourne sanction on police checks and on ANPR (number plate cameras).
  • Any on-duty officer may use the powers below until the fine is paid.

3. The 7-day notice

Police serve a 7-day notice: a final chance to pay before enforcement. Paying within the notice period is the easiest way out.

4. Community work permits

If you cannot pay, police can issue a community work permit so you work the fine off. You do one task for every $250 owed, up to a maximum of 200 tasks.

5. Wheel clamps

Police can clamp a vehicle registered to you. The clamp comes off within a minute of the fines being paid, so the quickest way to get moving again is to pay through Fines Melbourne on your phone.

Do not try to drive off or force a clamp; it is part of the roleplay, and so is paying it.

6. MCAT debts

When MCAT orders a person to pay and they do not, police can seize the overdue MCAT debt from their bank account into the court, for the claimant to collect.

7. Who enforces

Any Melbourne Police officer on duty, from the police tablet (Wanted > Fines enforcement). In our practice the officer identifies themselves before taking any step, explains what is owed and how to pay, and every step is recorded.
