Whitelisting

Department of Justice

Melbourne’s courts, Legal Aid, MCAT and the Coroners Court, run from the Justice tablet and the DOJ Discord.

Applications open

What the role involves

  • Listing and running sittings in the courthouse: mentions, contested hearings, trials and sentences.
  • Recording every decision on the Justice tablet, and handing the court papers over in person.
  • Deciding bail, warrant applications and intervention orders.
  • Prosecuting for the OPP, or appearing for the accused as a practising lawyer.
  • Juries, MCAT civil claims and coroner’s inquests when the city needs them.

What we expect

Falling short is how people lose the whitelist.

  • You rule on the evidence, the same way for strangers as for friends.
  • You keep sittings quick and fair: a player in the dock wants their story told, not a lecture.
  • You follow the Criminal Procedure Guide and record what you decide.
  • You keep what you read in the registry to yourself.
  • You turn up for the sittings you list, or hand them to somebody who will.

How this application is handled

  1. Submit

Answer everything in one sitting if you can. You cannot edit an application once it is in, so read it back first.

  2. Review

Two members of the recruiting team read it independently. You hear back within 5 business days either way.

  3. Interview

A 25-minute voice interview on Discord. Expect scenarios, not trivia — we want to hear how you think.

  4. Outcome

Accepted, and you start with a mentor on your first shift. Declined, and you get the reason plus when you can apply again.
