Whitelisting
Fire & Rescue
Melbourne’s fire service: fires, alarms, vehicle rescues and fire safety, run from the Fireground tablet and the Fire Services Discord.
Applications open
What the role involves
- Putting out fires that spread and relight: the extinguisher, the hose and the truck’s deck gun, foam for fuel, isolating the power on electrical fires.
- Clearing alarm activations, and cutting drivers out of crashed vehicles.
- Fire safety inspections of the city’s businesses.
- Working big fires with Police and Ambulance once a second alarm is called.
- Duty pay every half hour on shift, and work pay for every fire and call-out you do.
What we expect
Falling short is how people lose the whitelist.
- You put the fire out properly: knocked down is not out.
- You take direction from whoever holds command on the fireground, and give it clearly when it is you.
- You keep the radio for the job.
- You treat Police and Ambulance on a scene as your crew too.
- You turn up for your shifts, or tell your officers you can’t.
How this application is handled
Submit
Answer everything in one sitting if you can. You cannot edit an application once it is in, so read it back first.
Review
Two members of the recruiting team read it independently. You hear back within 4 business days either way.
Interview
A 20-minute voice interview on Discord. Expect scenarios, not trivia — we want to hear how you think.
Outcome
Accepted, and you start with a mentor on your first shift. Declined, and you get the reason plus when you can apply again.
